Location
The airport is located 22km (14 miles) east of Johannesburg.
Airport News
JNB is in the throes of massive redevelopment in the lead up to the 2010 World Cup tournament, including development of a new central terminal building, new car parks, a station on the new Gautrain network, and hotel expansions. Consequently, new facilities are constantly coming online in the interim, and considerable construction work may lead to changes in existing available facilities.
Transfer Between Terminals
A free shuttle bus operates between terminals and car parks.
Driving Directions
From Johannesburg, take the R24 to the airport; from Pretoria, take the R21. The airport is clearly signposted from these approach roads.
Car Parking
There are several car parks offering short- and long-term parking, including an underground facility, as well as outdoor and shaded parking. A free 24-hour shuttle bus service operates between the furthest car parks and the terminals. Call the ACSA office, open daily 24 hours (tel: (011) 921 6090/1) for further parking information. Valet parking, operated by Executive Carports (tel: (011) 390 2062; website: www.executivecarport.co.za) is available.
Car Hire
Companies Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Imperial, Khaya, National, Sizwe and Tempest are located in the multi-storey car park opposite the Domestic Terminal.
Public Transport
Road: It is advised to only use official ACSA-approved operators of taxi, shuttle and bus services. The airport information desks will provide assistance.
Bus: Magic Bus Airport Transfers (tel: (011) 548 0822; website: www.magicbus.co.za) has an office on the ground floor of the domestic Parkade building, and operates scheduled minibus services to and from the city.
Taxi: Official taxis operate from the bus and taxi terminal in the multi-storey car park building behind the car hire desks.
Information and Help Desks
Airport information desks are located in International Arrivals and Departures, and Domestic Arrivals. Information and flight details are available via the airport helpdesk (tel: (011) 921 6262). The Gauteng Tourism Authority Information Desk is situated in the International Arrivals Terminal (tel: (011) 390 3614/02).
Airport Facilities
Money and communications: There are ATMs, banks and bureaux de change at the airport, as well as a post office. Mobile telephone hire is also available. Wireless Internet access is available in the International Departures area.
Eating and drinking: There are plenty of places to eat and drink. Food outlets include coffee shops, a juice bar, steak houses, a bakery, and fast-food restaurants.
Shopping: The airport has a wide variety of shops, including a duty-free mall.
Luggage: A left-luggage facility (tel: (011) 390 1804) is available on the upper level of the underground car park, just off the International Arrivals area. Porters are available in the Arrivals hall and can be recognised by bright orange uniforms and ACSA badges; visitors should not use unauthorised porters; tipping is recommended.
Other facilities: There is a 24-hour medical clinic, a chapel, an Islamic prayer room and baby change facilities.
Conference and Business Facilities
There is a Business Centre (tel: (011) 921 6262) with facilities including fax, telephone and secretarial services. A Premier Conference Centre (tel: (011) 390 1084), in the Domestic Terminal, offers four meeting rooms seating up to 14 delegates, a seminar facility for up to 50 delegates and a conference room for up to 120 delegates. A media conference room is also available.
Facilities for Disabled Travellers
The airport has lifts (two of them are equipped with Braille signage) and ramps throughout the terminals. Disabled parking spaces are available. The free shuttle service which serves the remote car parking area can accommodate passengers in wheelchairs. Disabled passengers without a disabled pass should contact the ACSA-JIA help desk (tel: (011) 921 6262) for assistance. A golf cart service, which can accommodate disabled passengers, operates between the terminals and the car hire areas.
Hotels
There is a small Transit Hotel at the airport. The five-star Airport Sun InterContinental Hotel (tel: (011) 961 5400; website: www.ichotelsgroup.com) is situated opposite the airport. The Southern Sun O R Tambo International Airport (tel: (011) 975 1121; website: www.southernsun.com) and the Southern Sun Garden Court (tel: (011) 392 1062; website: www.southernsun.com) are also nearby.
