Location
The airport is situated 13km (8 miles) southwest of Shanghai city centre.
Airport News
A metro line 2 extension linking the airport and a new bus terminus is due to be completed in time for the 2010 World Expo. Nikko International Airport Hotel is scheduled to open in March 2009. For more info, visit www.jalhotels.com/upfile/373bd4c6dc.pdf.

Driving Directions
Taking the Yanan Xilu Highway is the easiest way to get to the airport from central Shanghai. The Hongqiao exit is clearly signposted.
Car Parking
Long- and short-term parking is available in front of both terminal buildings.
Car Hire
Most visitors hire a car with a driver (often from their hotel) on a daily or weekly basis. Otherwise, Angel Car Rental is based at the airport. Avis is currently the only international car hire company to operate at the airport. It offers self-drive cars and cars with drivers.
Public Transport
Road
Bus: Public buses run regularly to city destinations including the city ticket office. Bus 925 runs to People’s Square, bus 938 runs to Pudong Yangjiadu, bus 806 runs to Zhong Shan Nan Yi, bus 807 runs to Shanghai West Railway Station, and Airport Bus 1 runs to Shan Xi Lu. There is little space on buses for luggage. Further information is available from Airport Shuttle Bus Services (tel: (21) 6834 6912 or 6645).
Shuttle: Most major hotels run shuttle buses to/from the airport.
Coach: Long-distance coach services run to Suzhou, Nan Jing and Hongzhou.
Taxi: Taxis are available outside arrivals; the driver should use the meter, however, if it is not working, agree on the fare before leaving the airport (journey time: approximately 25-40 minutes). Travellers should make sure that they join the correct taxi queue, as which queue to join depends on the distance of the journey. A taxi trip into the centre includes a toll, upon exiting the airport, which is added to the fare. It is best to have the destination required written in Chinese or indicated on a map.
Information and Help Desks
Tourist information is available by telephone (tel: (021) 6439 0630). All signs are in English and Chinese, as are the intercom announcements.
Airport Facilities
Money and communications: There are bureaux de change, banks and ATMs throughout the airport, as well as two post offices, one in each terminal. International direct dial telephones are available in Arrivals, while public telephones take local coins and phone cards. Internet is also available.
Eating and drinking: There are restaurants, bars and coffee shops in both terminals.
Shopping: There is duty-free shopping, as well as a shopping market located just outside the airport entrance. Chinese specialities, such as silk clothing and scroll paintings, are available for purchase.
Luggage: Trolley hire is available. Uniformed porters can also be hired, although travellers should note that tipping is not allowed. A left-luggage service is also available. A lost property office is located in the Arrivals Hall of Building A (tel: (021) 5114 2071).
Other facilities: These include smoking areas throughout the terminals, a fitness centre in the Shanghai International Airport Hotel (see below), two clinics and a beauty salon.
Conference and Business Facilities
There are three mini business centres at the airport, offering mainly copying, fax and Internet services. You’ll find one in Building A, and two in Building B. For more extensive business facilities, The Shanghai International Airport Hotel (tel: (021) 6268 8866; website: www.siah.com) offers various meeting rooms, telephone, fax, photocopying and telex facilities, as well as catering services, 24 hours a day. VIP lounges are also available.
Facilities for Disabled Travellers
There are toilets for disabled travellers in the terminal building and the airport is equipped with lifts, elevators and ramps to provide easy access.
Hotels
The Shanghai International Airport Hotel (tel: (021) 6268 8866; website: www.siah.com) offers remote check-in for flights to Japan and a shuttle transfer to the international terminal. Hotels close to the airport include the Hengshan Hotel (tel: (021) 6437 7050; website: www.hengshanhotel.com/en), Hilton Shanghai (tel: (021) 6248 0000; website: www.hilton.com), Hotel Equatorial Shanghai (tel: (021) 6248 1688; website: www.equatorial.com/sha), Grand Mercure Hongqiao Shanghai (tel: website: www.mercure.com), Marriott Shanghai Hongqiao (tel: (021) 6237 6000 or 1 400 888 5551, in China only; website: www.marriott.com), New Garden Hotel (tel: (021) 6415 1111), Novotel Atlantis Shanghai (tel: (021) 5036 6666; website: www.novotel.com), Sheraton Grand Tai Ping Yang Hotel (tel: (021) 6275 8888; website: www.sheratongrand-shanghai.com), Sofitel Hyland Shanghai (tel: (021) 6351 5888; website: www.sofitel.com) and the Regal Shanghai East Asia Hotel (tel: (021) 6415 5588; website: www.regal-eastasia.com). Location
The airport is located 34km (21 miles) northwest of Hong Kong Island.
Airport News
A new five star, 1,000-room hotel development is scheduled for completion in late 2008, and will be operated by Marriott (website: www.marriott.com). There are plans to increase the airport’s runway capacity by 2009 to permit 58 aircraft movements per hour.
Transfer Between Terminals
A free automated people mover train runs between the east and west halls of Terminal 1 and from the new Terminal 2 to the gates. Electric vehicles can also transport passengers around the terminal for a fee (tel: 2261 2727).
Driving Directions
From Hong Kong Island, follow road signs to Western Harbour Tunnel. Once out of the tunnel, drive along the West Kowloon Expressway; follow airport road signs and cross the Tsing Ma Bridge to the airport island. Then continue along North Lantau Highway to reach the airport.
Car Parking
There is one undercover multi-storey car park (car park 4) and three open-air ground level car parks (car parks 1, 2, and 3). Car parks 1, 2 and 4 are short-term, while car park 3 is currently closed for construction work. Part of car park two is designated for long term use during this work. Complimentary 30-minute parking is available in car parks 1, 2 and 4.
Car Hire
Driving is chaotic in Hong Kong, and self-drive car hire is rare. Most people wishing to rent exclusive use vehicles rather than using taxis opt for chauffeur driven cars – these are available from Intercontinental Hire Cars (tel: 2261 2155; website: www.trans-island.com.hk), and Parklane Limousine Service (tel: 2261 0303; website: www.hongkonglimo.com). Both companies have desks in the Arrivals hall.
Public Transport
Rail: The MTR Corportation Airport Express Line (tel: 2881 8888; website: www.mtr.com.hk) operates trains that leave the airport for downtown Hong Kong (journey time – 23 minutes) stopping at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations, where check-in and free porter services are available. The station is located in the Ground Transportation Centre.
Road: Bus: Public buses also leave from the Ground Transportation Centre and from near car parks 1 and 2. Buses are operated by Citybus (tel: 2873 0818; website: www.citybus.co.hk), Long Win (tel: 2261 2791; website: www.kmb.com.hk) and New Lantao (tel: 2984 9848; website: www.newlantaobus.com). There are 11 Airbus routes to various parts of Hong Kong, including North Point Ferry Pier, Hung Hom station and Lam Tin station. Frequent external bus services are also available. Night buses take over after 2400. There are also six airport shuttle routes and a 24-hour Discovery Bay Airbus service, operated by DB Transit (tel: 2987 0208).
Coach: Cross-border coaches run by five operators offer regular services between the airport and major Guangdong cities in mainland China. A valid travel document for entry to mainland China is required.
Taxi: Taxis are readily available from the Ground Transportation Centre next to the passenger terminal. There are separate queues for various services; urban taxis are red and serve almost all destinations in the city, New Territories taxis are green, and Lantau taxis are blue.
Water: The SkyPier (tel: 2215 3232) provides high-speed ferry services between the airport and six points in the Pearl River Delta (DongGuan Humen, Macau, Zhuhai Jiuzhou, Zhongshan, Shenzhen Fuyong and Shenzhen Shekou). Tickets are available from the ferry transfer desk in the arrivals hall before travel. A bus service runs from the the airport to the piers.
Information and Help Desks
The Customer Service Centres can be found in the Departures check in hall and in the arrivals hall, open daily 0530-2400. Multi-media booths are located in the East, West and Arrivals halls, with interactive information and a touch-screen map. There are dozens of 24-hour help phones located throughout the terminal. Information in English is available (tel: 2181 0000).
Airport Facilities
Money and communications: There is a bank, and several bureaux de change counters and ATMs located throughout the terminal. A post office is located in the Departures hall. Free wireless Internet is available throughout the terminals. A Cyber Break Café is located in the northwest concourse and some 170 PowerPhones for Internet access can be found in the terminal and Ground Transportation Centre.
Eating and drinking: There are more than 150 food and drink outlets, including an Irish pub in the Arrivals hall.
Shopping: Shops including gift and duty-free are available in both terminals. There is a 24-hour convenience store in the Arrivals hall. A pre-order and pick-up service for duty-free products is available.
Luggage: Trolleys are available at all passenger drop-off points. A porter service operated by WFS (tel: 2261 2727), which also offers a home baggage pickup and delivery service, (tel: 2122 9813), is available at various points, including outside the Departures hall and the baggage reclaim hall. An excess baggage shipping service is also available at aisle K, before check in (tel: 2769 8681). A left-luggage facility is also available in the Arrivals hall (tel: 2261 0110). Lost and found services are available at the customer service centre, the airport police report centre and via the help phones; there is also a lost and found office on level 6 of the terminal (tel: 2182 2018).
Other facilities: There is a medical centre on level 6 (tel: 2261 2626) and a pharmacy. The Plaza Shower and Relaxation Lounge on level 7 of the west hall is open 24 hours and provides shower rooms, semi-private napping rooms and a mini salon. There is also an Oriental Massage Centre. Children’s play areas are located near gates 22 and 36, while nursery rooms are located at various points throughout the terminal. A non-denominational prayer room is situated in the check-in hall and is open 24 hours.
Conference and Business Facilities
The PCCW Business Centre is located in the Departures check in hall; services include fax facilities and mobile telephone hire. Further conference and business facilities are available from the Plaza Premium Lounge in the west hall (tel: 2261 2622) and east hall (tel: 2261 2668), as well as the Regal Airport Hotel (tel: 2286 8888). There are several airline lounges, and a number of multimedia lounges are available airside for departing passengers. The huge Asia World Expo convention and exhibitions complex (tel: 3606 8828; website: www.asiaworld-expo.com) is located adjacent to the airport.
Facilities for Disabled Travellers
The airport is fully accessible for disabled travellers. There are plenty of wheelchair-accessible toilets, lifts, ramps and escalators around the airport and Ground Transportation Centre. Car park spaces reserved for disabled drivers are available in car parks 1 and 4. Wheelchairs are provided free of charge by airlines; passengers should inform the airline prior to travel. For more information on wheelchair hire and in-terminal transportation, passengers should contact Worldwide Flight Services Holding SA (tel: 2261 2727). The terminal shuttle train is also wheelchair-accessible. Escalators and walkways have audio warning signals, while lifts, toilets and telephones have Braille signs. Tactile path guides and induction loops are installed at various points.
Hotels
The Regal Airport Hotel (tel: 2286 8888; website: www.regalairport.com) is connected to the passenger terminal by a covered walkway. Information counters and a booking service, operated by Hong Kong Hotels Association (tel: 2383 8380 or 2769 8822; website: www.hkta.org/hkha), can be found in the Arrivals hall. Airport Express Line rail ticket holders can catch a free Airport Express shuttle bus to many hotel destinations from either Kowloon or Hong Kong stations.

Airport News
The huge new US$2 billion, Norman Foster-designed, Terminal 3 opened in early 2008, ahead of the Beijing Olympics. The vast majority of international and domestic flights now leave from this terminal. A new direct metro line from the airport to the city centre is also set to open in 2008.
Transfer Between Terminals
Regular shuttle buses run between the three terminals.
Driving Directions
A dedicated Airport Expressway links PEK with the city centre. Several new airport roads are also scheduled for completion by the end of 2008.
Car Parking
Extensive parking facilities are offered on six levels in a multi-storey car park. It is equipped with electronic guide screens to assist with locating a space, but it is generally recommended that spaces are reserved in advance, as it is very busy.
Car Hire
Driving in China requires a Chinese-issued driving licence, so car rental usually includes a driver. A number of local agencies offer this service, and there is a car rental booth within the airport terminal. Recent legislation enables non-nationals to obtain temporary licences, but the major international car rental agencies are only just beginning to establish a foothold in the country. More information can be obtained from Avis China (website: www.avischina.com).
Public Transport
Rail
A new metro link to the city centre is due to open in 2008.
Road
Bus: The Airport-City Shuttle Bus departs from outside Arrivals and takes five routes into the city: Xidan, Gongzhufen, Fangzhuang, Beijing Railway Station and Zhongguancun. The most popular route is to Xidan in central Beijing, a short walk from the Forbidden City. The shuttle also stops at some major hotels.
Taxi: Metered taxis are available at the officially designated taxi ranks. Journey time to the city centre is between 45 and 60 minutes, dependent on traffic conditions. Passengers are advised to have the destination address either written in Chinese or marked clearly on a map.
Information and Help Desks
Tourist information (tel: (010) 6456 1100) is available in the Arrivals lounge from 0830 until the end of flight operations. Hotel booking assistance is available in the arrivals hall.
Airport Facilities
Money and communications: Facilities include banks, several bureaux de change, ATMs, telephones and a post office.
Eating and drinking: There are cafes and restaurants throughout the airport.
Shopping: There are shops in all the terminals, including tax and duty-free.
Luggage: Left luggage facilities are available in both Arrival and Departure halls (tel: (010) 6459 8151).
Other facilities: There is a 24-hour medical centre at the airport, and a passenger changing room is available.
Conference and Business Facilities
The airport has a business centre with Internet access, fax and computer facilities. Business services, including fax, photocopying and computer facilities, are also available in the VIP lounges. Alternatively, there are hotels close to the airport which provide business services. These include the Airport Garden Hotel (tel: (010) 6456 3388) and the Capital Airport Hotel (tel: (010) 6456 4466).
Facilities for Disabled Travellers
The airport is accessible to disabled travellers. The Beijing Airport Ground Service Corporation can provide assistance for travellers with physical disabilities.
Hotels
The Airport Garden Hotel (tel: (010) 6456 3388), the Capital Airport Hotel (tel: (010) 6456 4562), the Jinglin Hotel Beijing (tel: (010) 6457 2626), the Sino-Swiss Hotel Beijing (tel: (010) 6456 5588; website: www.sino-swisshotel.com) and the Airport Lantian Mansion Hotel (tel: (010) 8048 9108) are located within easy reach of the airport.
